Associação Recreativa Cultural e Social de Silveirinhos Intervention Area – MUSIC
Music has a world-renowned role as a therapeutic medium, among many other and endless advantages. However, with specific groups, such as people with disabilities and/or mental illness, is pointed out the need to question their role as artists, enhancers, creators and explorers, not assuming Music only as therapy or occupation.
Associação Social de Silveirinhos, a Portuguese ONG, believes and defends that people with disabilities want to be treated the same as anyone else. We also defend that Music has no “stamps”. In Music there are no preconceptions, there are no marks, there are, simply, people. So, Music is an important weapon to build a more equal society, where there is a real inclusion of these groups. For many, this might simply mean having the opportunity to take part in Music, for others, it’s about having a chance to perform and progress in skills. So, in any of the situations, Music shows abilities, and this way everyone see the person first, not their impairment.
We seek to undo the idea that it is necessary to have a special talent to make Music. So, by placing the participants in the discovery of sounds, of rhythms, in dialogue with reality and with personal history and common inheritance, we use a methodology based on the musical flow inside and outside the individual.
The various dynamization strategies exploit and reinforce competences: example, the timbral splendour, the spatiality of sound, etc. They promote oral participation based on personal experiences, finding basic material for the creation of multidisciplinary products. So, Music is a multi-sensorial experience.
In addition, Music tends to be one of the top motivators for everyone, facilitating the Work with mixed groups. Making music can therefore mean much more than simply playing an instrument, it’s about freedom, expression, aspiration and achievement. It can be a really important aspect of someone’s life.
